Quomodo legenda sit scriptura sacra quaerentibus scientiam in ea.

The Reader's Compass: Order and Method

Hugh presents order and method as the two guiding principles for reading, promising to instruct while leaving room for the reader's own discovery.

I'm setting before you, reader, two things — namely, order and method — which, if you examine them carefully, will easily open up the path of reading for you. In considering these matters, I won't leave everything to your own natural ability, nor do I promise that my diligence alone will be enough for you; instead, I'll briefly touch on certain points in advance, so that you may find some things laid out by which you can be instructed, and some things passed over by which you can be exercised and discover for yourself.

The Fourfold Order and Its Scriptural Application

Hugh recalls his fourfold distinction of reading order and acknowledges that its application to divine Scripture remains to be shown.

I mentioned earlier that the order of reading is fourfold: one order applies to the disciplines, another to books, another to narration, and another to exposition. How these are to be assigned in divine Scripture — that I have not yet shown.
