Chapter 9Didasc.4.9

De Novo Testamento.

The Good News of the New Testament

Just as the Old Testament is broadly called the Law, the whole New Testament is called the Gospel, specifically the four books that record the Savior's deeds and words, because they promise eternal rather than earthly goods.

Just as all the Old Testament Scripture can broadly be called the Law, yet the five books of Moses are specifically called the Law, so the whole New Testament can generally be called the Gospel, yet those four volumes—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John—in which the deeds and words of the Savior are clearly set forth, have deserved to be specifically called the Gospel. 'Gospel' means good news, because it promises eternal goods, not earthly happiness, as the Old Testament does according to the literal sense.

Read the original Latin

Sicut omnis scriptura Veteris Testamenti large lex appellari potest, specialiter tamen libri Moysi quinque lex dicuntur, ita generaliter totum Novum Testamentum evangelium dici potest, sed tamen specialiter quattuor illa volumina, Matthaei scilicet et Marci et Lucae atque Ioannis, in quibus facta et dicta Salvatoris plane explicantur, evangelium nuncupari meruerunt. evangelium interpretatur bonum nuntium, quia aeterna bona promittit, non terrenam felicitatem, ut Vetus Testamentum secundum litteram intellectum.
