Chapter 12Didasc.3.12

De disciplina.

The Way of Humble Study

True learning requires the inseparable companionship of a disciplined and humble life, without which knowledge becomes shameful.

When a certain wise person was asked about the method and pattern of learning, he answered: "A humble mind, a zeal for seeking, a quiet life, silent scrutiny, poverty, a foreign land — these things commonly unlock for many the obscurities of reading." He had heard, I think, the saying "Character adorns knowledge," and so to the precepts for reading he adds precepts for living as well, so that the reader may recognize both the manner of his own life and the measure of his own study. Knowledge stained by a shameless life is beyond all praise. And so the one who seeks knowledge must be especially on guard not to neglect discipline.
