De ordine et modo legendi et disciplina.
The Great Map of Philosophy
Philosophy is laid out in a structured hierarchy of theoretical, practical, mechanical, and logical branches with their subdivisions.
Philosophy is divided into the theoretical, the practical, the mechanical, and the logical. The theoretical is divided into theology, physics, and mathematics. Mathematics is divided into arithmetic, music, geometry, and astronomy. The practical is divided into the solitary, the private, and the public. The mechanical is divided into woolworking, armament, navigation, agriculture, hunting, medicine, and the theatrical. Logic is divided into grammar and discourse. Discourse is divided into demonstration, the probable, and the sophistical. The probable is divided into dialectic and rhetoric.
Counting the Branches
The summary notes that only the principal divisions are given and offers a numerical reckoning of the branches and their degrees.
This division contains only the main branches of philosophy. There are still further subdivisions of these parts, but these will do for now. So in these, if you look only at the number, you'll find twenty-one; if you want to count the degrees, you'll find twenty-eight.
The Authors Behind the Arts
Various authors contributed to the development of the arts, and a selection of their names will follow.
Various authors of these sciences are read. Some, by beginning, others, by expanding, and others, by perfecting, developed the arts, and so several authors of the same art are often reported. From these I will list the names of a few below.

Philosophia dividitur in theoricam, practicam, mechanicam, logicam. theorica dividitur in theologiam, physicam, mathematicam. mathematica dividitur in arithmeticam, musicam, geometriam, astronomiam. practica dividitur in solitariam, privatam, publicam. mechanica dividitur in lanificium, armaturam, navigationem, agriculturam, venationem, medicinam, theatricam. logica dividitur in grammaticam, dissertivam. dissertiva dividitur in demonstrationem, probabilem, sophisticam. probabilis dividitur in dialecticam, rhetoricam.
in hac divisione solummodo divisivae partes philosophiae continentur. sunt aliae adhuc subdivisiones istarum partium, sed istae nunc sufficere possunt. in his igitur si solum numerum respicis, invenies xxi; si gradus computare volueris, xxviii reperies. auctores harum scientiarum diversi leguntur. alii incipiendo, alii augendo, alii perficiendo artes invenerunt, sicque eiusdem artis plures saepe referuntur auctores. ex his paucorum nomina subter annumerabo.
