Chapter 9Didasc.2.9

De geometria.

From Earth to the Heavens

Geometry originated from the earthly necessity of the Egyptians remeasuring their Nile-flooded lands, but wise men later expanded its scope to measure the sea, sky, and all natural bodies.

Geometry means 'measurement of the earth,' because this discipline was first discovered by the Egyptians, whose boundaries the Nile would cover and blur with its flooding and its mud, so they began to measure the land with poles and ropes. Then wise men extended this even further, to the spaces of the sea and the sky and the air and whatever other bodies needed measuring.
