De arithmetica.
The Virtue of Number
Arithmetic derives its name from the virtue of number, by which all things were formed according to divine order.
Ares in Greek means 'virtue' in Latin, and rithmus is 'number'; hence arithmetic is called the virtue of number. Now the virtue of number is this: that all things were formed in its likeness.
