Prima: lanificium.

The Craft of Wool-Working

Hugh defines the art of wool-working as the comprehensive craft of making garments and household goods from wool, flax, hides, hemp, and similar materials by hand.

Wool-working includes all kinds of weaving, sewing, and spinning done by hand, with a needle, a spindle, an awl, a carding-comb, a comb, a smoothing tool, a curling-iron, a spinning-device, or with any other instruments at all, from whatever material comes from flax or wool, and from every kind of hides — shaved ones or ones with hair — as well as hemp, cork, rushes, felted hair, tufts of wool, or any other such material, that can be worked into the making of garments, coverings, linen cloths, military cloaks, saddle-cloths, under-blankets, curtains, chamber-pots, strainers, ropes, nets, and cords. Mats, too, from which people are accustomed to weave caps and baskets, belong to this craft. All these pursuits belong to the art of wool-working.
