A Morning Sacrifice of Praise
The believer acknowledges God as the Creator of day and night and offers early morning praise for His works.
Blessed be God, the Creator of heaven and earth; blessed be the Lord, who alone does wonders; and blessed be his glorious name forever! He is the one who, in his divine wisdom, created day and night and set them apart, ordaining that as long as the earth remains they shall not cease, so that people may rest at night and return to their work by day. Lord, how great and numerous your works are! You have ordered them all wisely, and the earth is full of your bounty.1 For such kindnesses we should thank you before the sun rises and come before you when the light breaks forth.

A prayer for safety after the night's rest and a call to cast off the works of darkness to live in the light of Christ.
So I praise you now as well, that through this night you have let me rest and sleep safely, and wake again glad and well, and that you have shielded me with a father's care from all the enemy's violence and malice. I ask you to enclose my soul in your hands, keep my body healthy according to your good pleasure, and guard me from every evil and harm. Be my mighty protection, my great strength, my shade against the heat, my shelter against the scorching noon, my guard against stumbling, and my help against falling, so that no evil may strike me. O kind God, since the hour has also come to rise from the sleep of sins and of all unrighteousness—because our salvation is now very near; for the night has passed, but the day has drawn near—help us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light, so that we may walk honorably as in the day, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in quarreling and envy, but that we may put on Jesus Christ in true faith and a Christian way of life.2
A Heart Attuned to Mercy
The prayer concludes with a request for an open ear to God's Word and the needs of the poor, ending in a plea for grace.
So wake me every morning; open my ear, that with a believing heart I may hear your holy Word and keep it in my memory, so that I may incline my ears to the crying and pleading of the poor and the wretched, and not abandon them in their need.✦✦ And when I cry to you again in my distress, hear also the voice of my pleading, and don't despise the sighing in my last extremity.✦✦3 Let my prayer come before you early.✦ Incline your ears to my cry.✦ Fill us early with your grace; then we will praise you and rejoice in you all our life long, through the same your dear Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.✦ Amen.

Gelobet sei Gott, der Schöpfer Himmels und der Erde, gelobet sei der Herr, der allein Wunder tut, und gelobet sei sein herrlicher Name ewiglich! Der den Tag und die Nacht durch seine göttliche Weisheit geschaffen und unterschieden hat, dazu verordnet, dass, solange die Erde steht, sie nicht sollen aufhören, auf dass der Mensch des Nachts möge seine Ruhe haben und am Tage wieder an seine Arbeit gehen. Herr, wie sind deine Werke so groß und viel, du hast sie alle weislich geordnet, und die Erde ist voll deiner Güter. Für solche Wohltaten sollen wir dir danken, ehe die Sonne aufgeht, und vor dich treten, wenn das Licht hervorbricht. Darum preise ich dich jetzt auch, dass du mich in dieser Nacht hast sicher ruhen und schlafen lassen und wiederum fröhlich und gesund erwachen, dazu vor aller Gewalt und Bosheit des Feindes väterlich beschirmet. Derhalben wecke mich alle Morgen, wecke mir das Ohr, dass ich mit gläubigem Herzen dein heiliges Wort höre, dasselbe in meinem Gedächtnis behalte, auf dass ich meine Ohren neige zu dem Schreien und Flehen der Armen und Elenden, dieselben in ihrer Not nicht verlasse. Und wenn ich wieder in meiner Angst zu dir rufe, so erhöre du auch die Stimme meines Flehens und verachte nicht das Seufzen in meiner letzten Not. Lass mein Gebet früh vor dich kommen. Neige deine Ohren zu meinem Schreien. Erfülle uns früh mit deiner Gnade, so wollen wir rühmen und fröhlich sein in dir unser Leben lang, durch denselben deinen lieben Sohn, Jesum Christum, unsern Herrn. Amen.
