Invocation of the Holy Spirit
A prayer to the Holy Spirit for guidance, faith, and the renewal of the inner person.
O God, Holy Spirit, who proceeds from the Father and is sent by the Son, sharing their form and co-eternal in one divine and undivided essence: I worship you; I honor, praise, and exalt you; and I thank you from the depths of my heart for all your kindnesses, especially that by your grace you have called and brought me to the holy Christian faith, poured yourself into me in my baptism, and work your works in me without ceasing.1 I ask you—because I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to him—that you would teach me, lead and guide me into all truth, increase and nourish the true faith in me, endow me with a right understanding of your Word, sanctify me in true prayer and right trust, and give and grant me the inward peace of conscience, with everlasting comfort, together with all joyfulness and steadfastness. Write Jesus Christ upon my heart, you who are the living finger of God; assure me by your witness; comfort me against all fear and the frailty of the flesh.2 Be my faithful help against the evil enemy's accusations; strengthen me against despair, so that in faith, by your grace, I may be sealed with the promise; for you are the pledge of my inheritance toward my redemption. Grant me also true devotion and sighs for prayer, that with true confidence and childlike trust I may cry out and say: Abba, dear Father! Give me true simplicity of heart, without any gall or bitterness—you who appeared in the form of a dove over our Lord Jesus Christ at the Jordan in his holy baptism. Kindle in me the fire of fervent love—you who let yourself be seen hovering in tongues of fire over the holy apostles—so that I may receive your anointing. Renew me in my inner self, that through you—who are powerful in Word and Sacrament—I may be born again.
A Prayer for Sanctification and Purity
A petition for protection against error and for the mortification of fleshly desires through the indwelling of the Spirit.
Protect me from idolatry and lies, and from all error and heresy. Take away the impurity of my mind.3 Extinguish and subdue every fleshly desire within me.✦ Do not let sinful lusts grow strong in my body, but make your dwelling in me and rule in all my members; accompany me into the true homeland.✦4 Amen.

O Gott Heiliger Geist, der du ausgehest vom Vater und gesandt wirst von dem Sohn, bist mit ihnen gleichförmig, mit ewig in einem göttlichen und unzerteilten Wesen, ich anbete dich, ich ehre, lobe und preise dich, und danke dir aus Grund meines Herzens für alle deine Wohltaten, und sonderlich, dass du mich durch deine Gnade zum heiligen christlichen Glauben berufen und gebracht, dich selbst in meiner Taufe eingegossen hast und ohne Aufhören in mir wirkest deine Werke. Ich bitte dich, weil ich nicht aus eigener Vernunft noch Kraft an Jesum Christum, meinen Herrn, glauben oder zu ihm kommen kann, du wollest mich lehren, in alle Wahrheit leiten und führen, den wahren Glauben in mir mehren und ernähren, mich mit rechtem Verstand deines Wortes begaben, in wahrer Anrufung und rechtem Vertrauen heiligen, innerlichen Frieden des Gewissens, mit ewigwährendem Trost neben aller Freudigkeit und Beständigkeit geben und schenken. Erneuere mich an dem inwendigen Menschen, dass ich durch dich, der du im Wort und Sakrament kräftig bist, möge wiedergeboren werden.
Behüte mich vor Abgötterei und Lügen, vor allem Irrtum und Ketzerei. Nimm hinweg die Unreinigkeit meines Gemüts. Lösche und dämpfe in mir alle fleischliche Begierde. Lass die sündlichen Lüste nicht kräftig werden in meinem Leibe, sondern mache du deine Wohnung in mir und herrsche in allen meinen Gliedern, begleite mich in das rechte Vaterland. Amen.
