A Petition for Public Peace
The prayer asks God to protect Christendom from war and internal strife, ensuring the preservation of order, schools, and the church.
Merciful God, eternal Father, you who are a God and lover of peace, from whom all unity comes to us: we ask you graciously to protect and uphold all of Christendom on earth against every enemy and bloodthirsty people, so that we, kept in good peace, may serve you safely and joyfully at all times in faithful teaching and a holy way of life; grant grace that every estate and ruler of Christendom may live with one another in peace and harmony, in all godliness and uprightness, so that good discipline, order, and civil government are not hindered or abolished, churches and schools are not destroyed, and the land is not laid waste and miserably ravaged.1 Therefore, grant grace that everyone would be content with what is their own, so that war, uprising, or revolt do not arise in these lands from greed, a craving for foreign lands and peoples, pride, vain honor, presumption, enmity, hatred, envy, or other causes.2 Guard us from strife and bloodshed. Thwart every evil counsel and will of restless people who have nothing good in mind; put them to shame in their plans, so that they must fall back and it ends in terror. Stretch out your arm to protect us who are called by your name, so that your inheritance is not scattered. Help your faithful who trust in you and call on your name; hear us in our need, and let your holy name protect us. Send us help from the sanctuary and strengthen us from on high.✦ Do good to the land and to the cities in which your holy Word dwells.
A Call to Harmony and Reconciliation
The prayer concludes by asking God to incline hearts toward concord and to reconcile those in conflict for the sake of the Gospel.
May there be peace within your walls and prosperity in your palaces. O gracious God! Incline the hearts of all people toward Christian peace and harmony, to which you have called us through your Word and Gospel. And where discord and bitterness have arisen among some, help that they may be settled and reconciled by fitting means and ways, to the honor of your holy name, the spread of your Word, and the welfare of all Christendom, so that the poor and afflicted in the land may rejoice in you and praise your holy name—you who alone do wonders and show your power among all peoples.3 Amen.

Barmherziger Gott, ewiger Vater, der du bist ein Gott und Liebhaber des Friedens, von dem alle Einigkeit zu uns kommt: wir bitten dich, du wollest die ganze Christenheit auf Erden gnädiglich beschützen und handhaben wider alle Feinde und blutgierige Menschen, auf dass wir in guter Ruhe erhalten dir sicher und fröhlich in treuer Lehre und heiligem Wandel allezeit dienen mögen; wollest Gnade verleihen, dass alle Stände und Potentaten der Christenheit unter einander friedlich und einträchtig in aller Gottseligkeit und Ehrbarkeit leben, auf dass gute Zucht, Ordnung und Polizei nicht verhindert und aufgehoben, Kirche und Schulen nicht zerstöret, das Land nicht verwüstet und jämmerlich verheeret werde. Deswegen gib Gnade, dass sich jedermann an dem Seinen lasse begnügen, damit nicht etwa aus Geiz und Begehren fremder Lande und Leute, aus Hoffart, eitler Ehre und Vorwitz, aus Feindschaft, Hass, Neid oder andern Ursachen in diesen Landen Krieg und Empörung oder Aufruhr entstehe. Behüte uns vor Unfrieden und Blutvergießen. Wehre allem bösen Rat und Willen unruhiger Leute, so nichts Gutes im Sinne haben; mache sie zu Schanden in ihren Gedanken, dass sie müssen zurückweichen und es ein Ende nehmen mit Schrecken. Strecke aus deinen Arm, uns zu beschützen, die wir nach deinem Namen genannt sind, auf dass dein Erbteil nicht zerstreuet werde. Hilf deinen Gläubigen, die sich auf dich verlassen, und deinen Namen anrufen; erhöre uns in der Not, und dein heiliger Name schütze uns. Sende uns Hilfe vom Heiligtum und stärke uns aus der Höhe. Tue wohl dem Lande und den Städten, in welchen dein heilig Wort wohnet.
Es müsse Friede sein inwendig in deinen Mauern, und Glück in deinen Palästen. O gütiger Gott! Neige die Herzen aller Menschen zu christlichem Frieden und Einträchtigkeit, zu welchem du uns durch dein Wort und Evangelium berufen hast. Da nun Uneinigkeit und Erbitterung zwischen etlichen entstanden wäre, so hilf, dass sie durch fügliche Mittel und Wege beigelegt und vertragen werden, zur Ehre deines heiligen Namens, und Ausbreitung deines Worts und zur Wohlfahrt der ganzen Christenheit, auf dass sich die Armen und Elenden im Lande in dir freuen, und deinen heiligen Namen rühmen, der du allein Wunder tust und beweisest deine Macht unter allen Völkern. Amen.
