The Promise of Resurrection
The resurrection of the dead is a divine act that transforms our corruptible bodies into spiritual and immortal ones.
What is the resurrection of the dead? The resurrection of the dead, which we await, is an act of God's almighty power, through which the bodies of those who have died, being reunited with their souls, will come to life again and become spiritual and immortal. "It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body" (1 Cor.1 15:44). "This corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality" (1 Cor. 15:53). Can the body rise again? The body that has decayed in the earth and crumbled away will rise again. Just as God created the body from the earth in the beginning, He will restore what has crumbled away from the earth at the end. The Apostle Paul explains this using the analogy of a seed, which decays in the earth but from which a plant grows. "What you sow does not come to life unless it dies" (1 Cor. 15:36). 15:36). Will everyone rise again? All the dead will rise, and the gross bodies of those who are still alive at the general resurrection will be instantly changed and become spiritual and immortal.✦2 "We shall not all die, but we shall all be changed, suddenly, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will rise incorruptible, and we shall be changed" (1 Cor.✦ 15:51–52).
The Transformation of the World
The current world will be transformed through fire into a new creation where death no longer reigns.
When will the resurrection of the dead take place? The resurrection of the dead will take place at the end of this visible world. How will the visible world end? This world, in which death reigns, will end by being transformed into a world without death. "The creation itself will be set free from slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God" (Rom.✦ 8:21). "In keeping with His promise, we look for a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells" (2 Pet 3:13). How is the world to be transformed? The world will be transformed by fire. “The present heavens and earth, kept by the same Word, are being reserved for fire for the day of judgment and the destruction of ungodly people” (2 Pet 3:7).✦
The State of Souls Before Judgment
Departed souls experience a foretaste of their final state, with the righteous dwelling in light and communion with Christ.
In what state do the souls of the dead remain until the general resurrection? Until the general resurrection, the souls of the righteous who have departed remain in light, rest, and a foretaste of eternal blessedness, while the souls of sinners remain in the opposite condition.3 Do the souls of the righteous who have passed away already dwell in full blessedness? The souls of the righteous do not yet receive full blessedness, because the complete reward for one's deeds is only appointed for a person after the resurrection of the body and God's final Judgment.4 The Apostle Paul says: "And now there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on that Day; and not to me only, but also to all who have loved His appearing" (2 Tim. 4:8). And again: "We must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each may receive according to what he has done while living in the body, whether good or evil" (2 Cor. 5:10). How do we know that the souls of the righteous are in a foretaste of blessedness? The souls of the righteous experience a foretaste of blessedness before the Last Judgment, according to the testimony of the Lord Jesus Christ Himself, who says in the parable that the righteous Lazarus was carried to Abraham's bosom immediately after death (see Luke✦ 16:22). What does the foretaste of blessedness consist of?5 The foretaste of blessedness is joined to the vision of Jesus Christ Himself.6 It belongs in a greater degree to the saints, as the Apostle Paul makes clear: "I have a desire to depart and be with Christ" (Phil. 1:23).
Prayer for the Departed
The Church offers prayers and the Eucharist to aid those who departed in faith but without full fruits of repentance.
What hope is there for the souls of the faithful who didn't have time to produce fruits of repentance? For souls who died in faith but didn't have time to produce worthy fruits of repentance, prayers offered for them—especially when joined with the offering of the unbloody sacrifice of the Body and Blood of Christ—and good works done in faith in their memory can help them attain the blessed resurrection. This teaching is based on the tradition of the Catholic Church, whose beginnings can already be seen in the Old Testament Church. Judas Maccabeus offered a sacrifice for the fallen soldiers (see 2 Maccabees 12:43). Prayer for the departed has always been an essential part of the Divine Liturgy, starting with the Liturgy of the Apostle James. Saint Cyril of Jerusalem says: “Great will be the benefit for the souls for whom prayer is offered at the time when the holy and dread Sacrifice is present” (Mystagogical Catechesis 5, ch. 9). Saint Basil the Great, in the prayers of Pentecost, says that the Lord is pleased to receive from us prayers and sacrifices for those held in Hades, with the hope for them of peace, the end of torments, and freedom.

Может ли тело воскреснуть? Тело, истлевшее в земле и рассыпавшееся, воскреснет. Поскольку Бог в начале сотворил тело из земли, постольку Он в конце из земли восстановит рассыпавшееся. Чем кончится видимый мир? Этот мир, в котором царствует смерть, окончится тем, что преобразится в мир без смерти. «Сама тварь освобождена будет от рабства тлению в свободу славы детей Божиих» (Рим. 8:21). «По обетованию Его, ожидаем нового неба и новой земли, на которых обитает правда» (2Пет 3:13).
Посредством чего мир должен преобразиться? Мир преобразится посредством огня. «Нынешние небеса и земля, содержимые тем же Словом, сберегаются огню на день суда и погибели нечестивых человеков» (2Пет 3:7).
В каком состоянии пребывают души умерших до всеобщего воскресения? Души умерших праведников до всеобщего воскресения пребывают во свете, покое и предначинании вечного блаженства, а души грешников – в противоположном тому состоянии.
В полном ли блаженстве пребывают души умерших праведников? Души праведных не воспринимают полного блаженства, потому что полное воздаяние по делам предопределено получить человеку по воскресении его тела и последнего Суда Божия. Апостол Павел говорит: «А теперь готовится мне венец правды, который даст мне Господь, праведный Судия, в день оный; и не только мне, но и всем возлюбившим явление Его» (2Тим. 4:8). И ещё: «Всем нам должно явиться пред судилище Христово, чтобы каждому получить соответственно тому, что он делал, живя в теле, доброе или худое» (2Кор. 5:10).
Откуда мы знаем, что души праведных пребывают в предначинании блаженства? Души праведных пребывают в предначинании блаженства прежде последнего Суда согласно свидетельству Самого Господа Иисуса Христа, говорящего в притче, что праведный Лазарь тотчас по смерти был отнесён на лоно Авраамово (см. Душам умерших с верой, но не успевших принести достойных плодов покаяния, для достижения блаженного воскресения могут помочь возносимые за них молитвы, особенно соединённые с приношением бескровной жертвы Тела и Крови Христовой, и добрые дела, с верой совершаемые в их память.
Это учение основано на предании Кафолической Церкви, начала которого видны ещё в Ветхозаветной Церкви. Иуда Маккавей принёс жертву за умерших воинов (см. 2Мак 12:43). Молитва за усопших всегда является непременной частью Божественной Литургии, начиная от Литургии апостола Иакова. Святой Кирилл Иерусалимский говорит: «Великая будет польза душам, о которых возносится моление в то время, когда предлежит святая и страшная Жертва» (Тайноводственное поучение, 5, гл. 9). Святой Василий Великий в молитвах Пятидесятницы говорит, что Господь соизволяет принимать от нас молитвы и жертвы о тех, кто удерживается в аду, с надеждой для них мира, прекращения мучений и свободы.
