The Nature and Institution of the Eucharist

The Sacrament of Communion is defined as the essential part of Christian worship, instituted by Christ before His passion.

What is the Sacrament of Communion? Communion (or the Eucharist) is the Sacrament in which the believer, under the forms of bread and wine, partakes of the true Body and Blood of Jesus Christ for eternal life. How was this Sacrament instituted? The Lord Jesus Christ first celebrated the Sacrament of Communion right before His sufferings, having first established in it a living image of those sufferings.1 After giving Communion to the apostles, He at the same time gave them the commandment always to celebrate this Sacrament. What place does this Sacrament hold in Christian worship? The Sacrament of Communion is the chief and essential part of Christian worship. During which divine service is the Sacrament of Communion celebrated? The Sacrament of Communion is celebrated during the Liturgy.

The Liturgy: Preparation and Proskomedia

This section explains the meaning of the Liturgy, the significance of the church and altar, and the symbolic preparation of the elements during the Proskomedia.

What does the word Liturgy mean? The word liturgy means public service.2 However, only the form of divine worship where the Sacrament of Communion is celebrated is called the Liturgy. Where must the Liturgy be celebrated? The Liturgy must be celebrated in a church that has an altar (holy table), or, instead of an altar, an antimension—both of which must always be consecrated by a bishop.3 Why is the temple also called a church? The temple is called a church because the faithful who make up the Church gather there for prayer and the Sacraments.4 Why is the table also called the throne?5 The table where the Sacrament of Communion is celebrated is called the throne because Jesus Christ is mysteriously present on it as King. What is the general order for celebrating the Liturgy? The general order of the Liturgy is as follows: the matter for the Sacrament is prepared; the faithful prepare themselves for the Sacrament; the Sacrament itself is celebrated. What is the part of the Liturgy called where the elements for the Sacrament are prepared? The part of the Liturgy where the elements for the Sacrament are prepared is called the Proskomedia. What does the word “Proskomedia” mean? The word Proskomedia means offering. Why is the first part of the Liturgy called the Proskomedia? The first part of the Liturgy is called the Proskomedia, following the early Christian custom of bringing bread and wine to church for the celebration of the Sacrament. For that same reason, this bread is called prosphora, which means offering. What is the meaning of the proskomedia? The proskomedia, as a part of the Liturgy, is a remembrance of the prophecies and foreshadowings, and partly also of the events themselves, that relate to the birth and suffering of Jesus Christ.6 During this time, the portion needed for celebrating the Sacrament is taken from the prosphora, and the required amount of wine mixed with water is poured into the sacred vessel. At the same time, the celebrant commemorates the whole Church and the glorified saints, praying for the living and the dead, for the authorities, and for those who have brought prosphoras or offerings in faith and with zeal.7 What kind of bread is used for the Proskomedia? For the Sacrament, bread is used that answers to the idea of bread, and of the kind required by the holiness of the Sacrament, the example of the Lord Jesus Christ and the apostles, i.8 e.9 It must be leavened, pure, wheaten bread. Why is one bread used for Communion? The one bread used for Communion means, according to the apostle's explanation, that "there is one bread, and we who are many are one body; for we all partake of the one bread" (1 Cor. 10:17). Why is the bread prepared for Communion called the Lamb? The bread prepared for Communion is called the Lamb because it is an image of the suffering Jesus Christ, whose type in the Old Testament was the Paschal Lamb.10 What is the Paschal Lamb? The Paschal Lamb is the lamb that the Israelites, by God's command, slaughtered and ate to remember their deliverance from destruction in Egypt.

The Liturgy of the Catechumens and the Faithful

The structure of the Liturgy is detailed, focusing on the transition from the Liturgy of the Catechumens to the Liturgy of the Faithful and the mystery of transubstantiation.

Why is the wine for the Sacrament of Communion mixed with water? The wine for the Sacrament of Communion is mixed with water because this sacred action follows the pattern of Christ's suffering, when blood and water flowed from the wound in His side. What is the name of the part of the Liturgy where the faithful prepare for the Sacrament? The part of the Liturgy where the faithful prepare for the Sacrament was called by the ancients the Liturgy of the Catechumens. Besides those who are baptized and admitted to Communion, catechumens may also be present for it—that is,11 e.,12 those preparing for Baptism, as well as penitents who are not admitted to Communion. How does the Liturgy of the Catechumens begin? The Liturgy of the Catechumens begins with a blessing, or the glorification of the kingdom of the Most Holy Trinity. What does the Liturgy of the Catechumens consist of? The Liturgy of the Catechumens consists of prayers, hymns, and the reading of the Apostolic books and the Gospel. How does the Liturgy of the Catechumens end? The Liturgy of the Catechumens ends with the command for the catechumens to leave the church. What is the Liturgy of the Faithful? The part of the Liturgy during which the Sacrament of Communion is celebrated is called the Liturgy of the Faithful. Only the faithful have the right to be present at this service, that is, that is,13 those who have received Baptism. What is the most important action of the Liturgy of the Faithful? The most important action of the Liturgy of the Faithful is the speaking of the words Jesus Christ said when He instituted the Sacrament: “Take, eat; this is My Body… Drink of it, all of you; this is My Blood of the New Testament”… (Matt. 26:26–28); and then the invocation of the Holy Spirit and the blessing of the Gifts, i. that is, the bread and wine that have been offered. What is the meaning of this action? At that time, after the threefold blessing of the bread and wine, they are changed, or transubstantiated, into the true Body of Christ and the true Blood of Christ.14 How should we understand the word "transubstantiation"?15 The Confession of Faith of the Eastern Patriarchs states that the word "transubstantiation" doesn't explain the manner in which the bread and wine are changed into the Body and Blood of the Lord. No one can grasp this except God. It only shows that truly, really, and in substance, the bread becomes the very true Body of the Lord, and the wine the very Blood of the Lord.16 In the same way, Saint John of Damascus writes about the Holy and Most Pure Mysteries of the Lord: "The Body is truly united with the Godhead—precisely that which was taken from the Most Holy Virgin." But the Body that has ascended doesn't come down from heaven; rather, the bread and wine are changed into the Body and Blood of God. If you want to understand how this happens, it's enough to know that it's by the descent of the Holy Spirit.17 In the same way, the Lord also, by the Holy Spirit, formed flesh for Himself and in Himself from the Mother of God.18 I know nothing further than that the Word of God is true, efficacious, and almighty, but His working is incomprehensible” (Bk.19 4, ch. 13, verse20 7.

Devout Participation and Liturgical Symbolism

Instructions are given for worthy reception of the Sacrament, followed by an explanation of the symbolic actions of the Liturgy and the promise of the Eucharist until Christ's return.

How should one approach the Sacrament of Communion? Anyone approaching the Sacrament of Communion must examine their conscience before God and cleanse it through repentance for their sins, which fasting and prayer help to facilitate.21 "Let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of this bread and drink of this cup. For whoever eats and drinks unworthily eats and drinks judgment upon himself, not discerning the Lord's body" (1 Cor. 11:28–29). What happens to us in the Sacrament of Communion? The one who receives the Body and Blood of Christ is united with Jesus Christ Himself and, in Him, is made a partaker of eternal life. “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him” (Jn. 6:56). “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life” (Jn. 6:54). How often should one receive the Holy Mysteries? Early Christians received Communion every Sunday, but today few possess the purity of life to be always ready to approach such a great Sacrament. The Church, with a maternal voice, exhorts those who strive for a devout life to confess before their spiritual father and to receive the Body and Blood of Christ four times a year or every month, and requires everyone to do so at least once a year (see22 Orthodox Confession, pt. 1, question 90). How do those who don't receive the Holy Mysteries take part in the Liturgy? Those who don't approach Holy Communion may and ought to take part in the Liturgy through their faith, prayer, and especially through a continual remembrance of our Lord Jesus Christ, who commanded: "Do this in remembrance of Me" (Luke 22:19). What is the meaning of the Gospel procession during the Liturgy? When the Gospel is carried in procession during the Liturgy, we remember the Lord Jesus Christ as He appeared to preach. Therefore, during the reading of the Gospel we should have the same attention and reverence as if we were seeing and hearing Jesus Christ Himself. How should we understand the procession with the prepared Holy Gifts? When the entrance into the altar is made with the prepared Holy Gifts during the Liturgy, we should remember Jesus Christ going to His voluntary suffering as a sacrifice to be slain, even while more than twelve legions of angels stood ready to guard Him as their King. The King of kings and Lord of lords comes to be slain (a hymn from the Liturgy on Holy Saturday).23 What should we keep in mind while the Sacrament is being celebrated? While the Sacrament is being celebrated and the clergy are receiving Communion at the altar, we should remember the Mystical Supper of Jesus Christ Himself with the apostles, along with His suffering, death, and burial.24 What is the meaning of the curtain opening, the Royal Doors, and the appearance of the Holy Gifts? The opening of the curtain and the Royal Doors, along with the appearance of the Holy Gifts, signifies the appearance of the Lord Jesus Christ Himself after the resurrection. What is the significance of the final showing of the Holy Gifts to the people? The final showing of the Holy Gifts to the people, after which they are hidden from view, represents the Ascension of the Lord Jesus Christ into heaven. Will the Sacrament of Holy Communion always remain in the true Church? The celebration and reception of the Sacrament of Holy Communion in the true Christian Church will continue until Christ's very coming, according to the word of the Apostle Paul: "As often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until He comes" (1 Cor. 11:26).

Notes

  1. 1Russian «страданиями» can mean His Passion as a whole or His sufferings in general; rendered as «sufferings» to stay close to the source without forcing the technical term Passion. «живое изображение» is rendered «living image» (not mere symbol) to keep the catechetical force of a real, vivid representation of the Passion in the first Eucharist.
  2. 2Russian «общественное служение» renders the Greek etymology of λειτουργία (common/public service). «Public service» is preferred over «common service» for contemporary clarity; both are faithful.
  3. 3Russian трапеза (престол): трапеза is the altar-table; престол names the same holy table as the bishop's throne/altar. Antimension (антиминс) is the consecrated cloth that may stand in place of a fixed altar.
  4. 4Russian distinguishes храм (the consecrated building) from Церковь (the Church as the body of the faithful). English 'church' covers both; 'temple' keeps the building sense, and capitalized 'Church' marks the assembly.
  5. 5In Orthodox usage, трапеза is the Holy Table, and престол (literally “throne”) is the same altar-table named for Christ’s royal presence there.
  6. 6прообразований rendered as foreshadowings (typological prefigurations of Christ); alternative: types/figures.
  7. 7священнодействующий rendered as celebrant (the priest performing the rite); more literal: the one performing the sacred action / officiating priest.
  8. 8Source sentence is cut mid-abbreviation at «т.» (beginning of «т.е.» = ‘that is’ / ‘i.e.’); sense continues in s3–s4.
  9. 9Standalone «е.» is the second half of the Russian abbreviation «т.е.» (‘that is’ / ‘i.e.’), split across s2–s3.
  10. 10Russian образ here is rendered “image” (figure/representation); прообраз is rendered “type” in the typological sense (prefiguration).
  11. 11Source sentence is split across s3–s5; Russian «т.» is the first half of the abbreviation «т.е.» (that is / i.e.).
  12. 12Isolated «е.» is the second half of Russian «т.е.» (то есть, “that is” / “i.e.”), split from s3.
  13. 13Russian 'т.е.' (то есть, 'that is') is split across s3–s4; rendered here to preserve the abbreviation unit without inventing new content.
  14. 14Source runs пресуществляютсяв together; read as пресуществляются в ("are transubstantiated into").
  15. 15Russian пресуществление is rendered with the standard English theological term "transubstantiation"; the next sentences define its Orthodox sense as asserting real change without explaining the manner.
  16. 16истинно, действительно и существом is rendered "truly, really, and in substance" to keep the Confession's three-fold insistence on real change in being, not merely in figure or effect.
  17. 17Russian is elliptical after что ("that [it happens] by the descent..."); the finite verb is supplied for natural English without adding doctrinal content.
  18. 18Богородицы rendered "Mother of God" for modern readability; the traditional Greek title is Theotokos. Себе Самому и в Себе Самом keeps the Damascene double reflexives "for Himself and in Himself."
  19. 19Russian «действительно» here continues Damascene’s triad for the Word of God; rendered “efficacious” (true, effective, almighty) rather than merely “real,” matching the classical sense of the quoted passage.
  20. 20Russian «ст.» may mark verse, article, or section in the Damascene reference; rendered “v.” as the ordinary English citation shorthand.
  21. 21Russian pairs испытать with parenthetical открыть ('open'); rendered as examine (open) to keep both the self-examination sense and the catechism's explanatory gloss.
  22. 22Russian «а всем – обязательно раз в год» sets a universal minimum of once a year; the four-times-yearly or monthly counsel is for those striving toward a devout life.
  23. 23The parenthetical identifies a liturgical hymn sung at the Liturgy of Holy Saturday; the quoted line is traditional Church Slavonic cadence preserved in the catechism.
  24. 24Russian «тайную вечерю» is the Orthodox liturgical name for the Last Supper (often rendered Mystical Supper); kept here for sacramental specificity rather than the more generic Western 'Last Supper' alone.
