A Fourfold Examination
The penitent is instructed to examine their conscience regarding preparation, contrition, sacramental reverence, and spiritual progress before beginning their confession.
After saying the general confession, before he begins the specific confession of his faults, he should accuse himself of the following four things. First, that he hasn't come as prepared for this Sacrament as he should have, nor has he examined his conscience with the care he ought to have. Second, that he hasn't brought as much sorrow and repentance for his faults, nor as firm and true a purpose to turn away from them, as he should have. Third, that he hasn't approached the holy Sacrament of Communion with the purity of conscience, reverence, and devotion that was fitting; and, after receiving Communion, that he hasn't maintained the recollection that such a high Guest required. Fourth, of not having put as much diligence into amending his life and of not having tried to make more progress each day in the service of our Lord, but instead of having stayed in the same lukewarmness and negligence, and even gone backward. With that said, he should begin to accuse himself in the following order.

Dicha la confesión general, antes que entre en la acusación particular de sus culpas, acúsese destas cuatro cosas siguientes. Primeramente, de no venir tan aparejado a este Sacramento, ni haber puesto tanta diligencia en examinar su conciencia, como debiera. Lo segundo, de no traer tanto dolor y arrepentimiento de sus culpas, ni tan firme y verdadero propósito de apartarse dellas, cuanto debiera. Lo tercero, de no haberse llegado al santo sacramento de la Comunión con aquella pureza de conciencia y con aquella reverencia y devoción que convenía; y, después de haber comulgado, de no haber tenido aquel recogimiento que para tan alto Huésped se requería. Lo cuarto, de no haber puesto tanta diligencia en la enmienda de su vida y procurado de aprovechar cada día más en el servicio de nuestro Señor, sino antes permanecido en una misma tibieza y negligencia, y aun vuelto atrás. Dicho esto, comience a acusarse por la orden siguiente.
