II. Del tronc del Arbre d'amor
The Trunk's Three Parts
The trunk of the Tree of Love is divided into form, matter, and their conjunction.
The trunk of the Tree of Love is divided into three parts: the form of love, the matter1 of love, and the conjunction of both.2
The Trunk's Purpose and Use
The trunk joins all roots of love, enabling the lover to discern which root most stirs his love and to balance them for greater virtue.
The reason we place a trunk of love in this Tree of Love is that the trunk of love is the joining together of all the roots of love; and the lover, when he loves his beloved, is sometimes more stirred to love his beloved by one root than by another — just as the lover who sometimes loves the beloved more by good love than by great love, or by great love than by lasting love, and so with the others; and for this reason the lover, through the teaching we give in the trunk of love, can know the art and method by which he will recognize which root of love most occasions him to love his beloved; and for this reason one can multiply the roots and equalize them, so that the love may be greater, more lasting, stronger, and more virtuous.34

Notes
- 1 ↩Source ends with the corrupt token "ZlJv-"; the intended reading continues in the next sentence as "d'amor," yielding "matèria d'amor" (matter of love). Confirmed by later chapter titles on the matter and conjunction of love.
- 2 ↩Leading "w" treated as OCR noise. "damor" completes the previous sentence's "matèria d'amor." "damdós" read as d'amdós, "of both" (form and matter).
- 3 ↩Source reading "rails" treated as "arrels" (roots), consistent with the Tree of Love root/trunk metaphor and neighboring sections.
- 4 ↩Corrupt "cgualar,'" read as "igualar" (to equalize/make equal); trailing punctuation treated as noise.
