VI. De les flors d'amor

The Three Flowers of Love

Love's flowers are three: the heights, praises, and honors of the Beloved, and the reason for placing them in the Tree is to teach amplification of love, which begins, multiplies, and nourishes a good lover.

The flowers of love are: Three. Namely: the heights, praises, and honors of the Beloved, in whom the soul of the Friend has glory.1 And the reason why we place these three kinds of flowers in this Tree is so that we may teach how to amplify the loving of the heights, praises, and honors of the Beloved; for through such amplification loving begins, and it multiplies and nourishes a good lover.2

Read the original Catalan

Notes

  1. 1 ↩Catalan altees can mean heights, exaltations, or high excellences; rendered as heights to match Llull's paired use of altea with goodness in the following chapter.
  2. 2 ↩Source forms amaficar and amaflcació look corrupt; translated as amplify / amplification (amplificar / amplificació), the most plausible intended reading in context.
