V. De les fuyles d'amor
The Leaves of Love: Sighs, Tears, and Fears
Love's leaves are sighs drawn from the heart's desire, tears that water the eyes through toil, and fears that witness failures and threaten the idle lover.
The leaves of love are sighs, tears, and fears. These sighs rise from the lover's heart, which is so full of love that it forces him to sigh from the intense desire he feels for the Beloved and from the hardships he endures for love; love draws these sighs out of the heart, roots and all. By examining those roots, we will discuss the sighs of love, so that we may teach you how to recognize the springs from which these sighs are born.1 Tears of love are the waters that water and moisten the eyes through love, and this love makes the friend feel the toils and languishings, the fortunes and perils he has in serving and honoring his beloved.2 The fears of love are witnesses that tell of the failings the lover has committed against love and his beloved; and they are the scourges with which love and the beloved threaten the lover when he loves little and because he keeps the roots of love idle—roots with which we will speak of the tears and fears of love.3

Notes
- 1 ↩Source rails is read as arrels (roots), fitting the chapter's tree allegory of love's leaves; alternative senses are unlikely here.
- 2 ↩Old Catalan ventura/ventures can mean fortunes (turns of chance) or adventures; rendered as 'fortunes' to sit with toils, languishings, and perils in the lover's service.
- 3 ↩Old Catalan rails = roots (arrels), continuing Llull's tree-of-love allegory; not modern 'rails'.
- 4 ↩Source Fjlosopia corrected to Filosofia (Philosophy); the line is a running title/page number, not body prose.
