One can ask questions of love in ten. ways, that is to say, does love exist?1 What is love? Of what is love?2 Why is there love? How great is love?3 What kind of love is it? When is love? Where is love? How is love? With what is love? And by these4 ten5

The Method and Beginning of Inquiry

Each question is paired with its condition as solution, and the inquiry begins with questions of goodness and love.

types of questions, we want to ask about love in various ways; we refer each question to its condition, which serves as its solution, and that solution corresponds to it by rubric and by number.6 First, we will speak of the questions regarding goodness and love.

Read the original Catalan

Notes

  1. 1 ↩Witness reads «a faber»; corrected to the stock Llull formula «a saber» («that is to say»), used repeatedly in this work. Long-s / f confusion is the likely cause.
  2. 2 ↩Scholastic «de què» / de quo: of what love is constituted or concerning what it is. Kept as «Of what» to preserve the question-type, not paraphrased as «What is love made of?»
  3. 3 ↩Witness begins «5 quanta…»; the leading 5 is almost certainly a fused list numeral for the fifth manner, not part of the question wording.
  4. 4 ↩Sentence is cut mid-phrase; with s6–s7 the intended reading is ‘And by these ten kinds of questions…’.
  5. 5 ↩Roman numeral x. = 10; belongs with the surrounding ‘E per aquestes … maneres de qüestions’ phrase.
  6. 6 ↩‘condició’ here is Llull’s technical ‘condition’ (the matching doctrinal heading that solves the question), not ordinary circumstance.
