Condicions d'amor: De mijà e amor

The Middle Place of Love

Loving, as the end and consolation of both lover and beloved, stands in the middle place of love.

At the heart of love is loving, which is the goal of the lover and the beloved, and the consolation of both.1

Greater Love, Greater Means

The second condition states that a greater means of love requires a greater love itself.

ii. Without greater love there can be no greater means of love.

Love of Equals

The third condition declares that the greatest means of love belongs to an equal friend and beloved.

iii. The means of love that belongs to an equal lover and beloved is greater.

Lesser Love, Lesser Beloved

The fourth condition explains that a lesser love cannot sustain the lover in a greater beloved.

4.2 Through a lesser love, the lover's love does not reside in a greater beloved.3

Read the original Catalan

Notes

  1. 1 ↩Catalan fi here is teleological (goal/purpose), not temporal ending; end keeps Llull's scholastic sense. Mig loc / mijà names the medial means of love between amic and amat.
  2. 2 ↩Source reads “jiij.”; taken as Roman numeral “iiij.” (4.), matching the chapter’s numbered conditions and the preceding “iij.”
  3. 3 ↩“lamar” read as “l'amar” (the act of loving). “Amic” / “amat” kept as Llull’s lover / beloved pair; “està … en” rendered as “stand in,” for residing or being directed in the beloved.
